STAR CHART : World’s first Virtual Reality Planetarium

Independent UK development studio, and creators of the 20+ million user Star Chart app, have released the world’s first mobile Virtual Reality Planetarium: Star Chart. Available now on the Gear VR.

Star Chart is the hit astronomy and stargazing app that brings the beauty and magic of the night sky to life. More than 20 million people have downloaded Star Chart on various platforms since launch, and we are proud to bring this magical experience to virtual reality.

Our intention when building Star Chart for virtual reality is to make the educational exploration of the visible universe as fun, entertaining, immersive, effortless and accessible as possible. Bringing Star Chart to the ultimate immersive platform virtual reality has taken space exploration to a whole new level. Gear VR users now have access from the comfort of their home to an experience more compelling than that of a multimillion dollar planetarium.

Star Chart is the ultimate Virtual Reality experience: Explore the Solar System in a profound, beautiful and accurate realtime simulation. From the Sun to the smallest moons of Saturn and out to the farthest reaches of Pluto. Gaze down and marvel at our Solar System from above, or look up in wonder at the rings of Saturn. Feel the awe of floating in space around worlds no human has yet set foot on. Understand how the constellations of our night sky are made up of distant stars in both space and time. Embrace the inhuman distances of our solar system and the inordinate scale of our universe.

Star Chart for Virtual Reality currently includes:

● An accurate realtime simulation of the visible stars and planets as you see them from Earth.

● A 3D solar system to explore, including the Sun, the planets and major moons.

● All 88 constellations featuring beautiful artwork of the 17th century astronomer Johannes Hevelius.

“One of the joys of working on Star Chart is the ability to create the future. Star Chart in virtual reality is the sort of experience that until now only existed in science fiction novels and movies. Now with the Gear VR we’ve not only dreamt it, we’ve built it! We wanted to make Star Chart a wonderfully peaceful and yet aweinspiring experience and I think we’ve succeeded!” says Chris Walley, creator of Star Chart and cofounder of Escapist Games.

Chris’ business partner San Shepherd explains: “Star Chart for VR gives everyone the possibility of exploring the Universe in the equivalent of their own personal holodeck. My own children are growing up with an intimate understanding of the size, scale and distances of our Solar System they learn by directly experiencing it in VR. The advent of consumer ready virtual reality is something we could only dream about as children. And now my inner child finally gets to experience being an astronaut, albeit a virtual one.”

Star Chart for VR will be continuously updated with the addition of new features and enhancements, as well as launching on new platforms throughout 2016.

Escapist Games Ltd was founded in 2008 by a couple of exElectronic Arts AAA console game developers to make games and apps for the then newly emerging direct to consumer app stores.

Star Chart came about due to a fascination with technology and everyone’s childhood awe of space, while Star Chart’s success is down to consumer word of mouth and the rise of the mobile smart technology era. Daily around 15 thousand people download Star Chart across various platforms.
