The RapidRail VR Story

Written by  Olivier Demangel March 22th 2016 : I was contacted at that time by the company ITSL in London to design a concept of a train.

The purpose was to link all modes of transport around London, to enable sustainable growth for commerce and people by providing greater convenience for travel by road, rail and air.

The first version of RapidRail VR was made using “classic” 3d and was first showed publically by the end of 2012. In September 2014, IVR-Nation was just in motion and I was looking for a proof of concept in Industrial design.

I decided to get back to my old files and convert the train to Unreal Engine 4 and Oculus Rift DK2. The first time I saw the result in VR, I’ve to admit I was blown away by the fact to see my own design in VR.

From that moment, I was sure all designers will use VR as an essential tool every day in their work in the future.

By the end of 2015, we just finished to develop at IVR-Nation a plugin for Unreal Engine 4 able to generate 360 4k stereoscopic videos. I thought it was a good idea to make that public and Rapid Rail VR was our first 360 4k stereoscopic video released on YouTube and MilkVR.
